- ECO DIVE RESORT-

LADY ELLIOT ECO RESORT

The Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort is on Lady Elliot Island, a coral cay, located at the southern tip of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef.

Situated within a highly protected ‘Green Zone’ the coral cay is a sanctuary for over 1,200 species of marine life & it's known for its abundance of manta rays, turtles, & unspoilt coral reef.

The Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort is a family run & operated eco-tourism business. Peter Gash, family & several partners have held the lease from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority to operate the resort since 2005. Since this time, enormous strides have been made to introduce sustainable initiatives to convert the resort to renewable energy with the goal to be 100% renewable by 2020.

SUSTAINABILITY

The Resorts Sustainability Program

Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort is a world-leading, award-winning ecologically sustainable tourism operator dedicated to protecting and enhancing Lady Elliot Island, the Great Barrier Reef and surrounding communities.

The Vision: Is for Lady Elliot Island to remain a pristine coral cay within a green zone in the southern World Heritage Listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. They wish to provide a nature-based destination, giving an opportunity for visitors from all over the world to experience the natural beauty, the fragile ecosystem, of a coral cay and its inhabitants, including the birds and the marine creatures, which live on or visit the island and the surrounding reef.

The Mission: Is to be custodians of this pristine environment. To enable it to exist and be preserved as nature intended, while giving visitors the opportunity to experience it in an economically and ecologically viable way, without interfering with or having any adverse impact upon the long-term sustainability of the island’s unique ecosystem.

Recognition

Sustainability Actions

The Challenge

Implementing sustainability initiatives on a remote, off-grid Island is an extreme challenge. There is no supplied electricity, no mains water or wastewater treatment operation & no weekly garbage truck! The Resort has to produce its own electricity, desalinate its own water, treat all water & sewage then remove ALL waste whilst adhering to our sustainability objectives of minimal impact on the planet.

Their Actions

It has been a thrilling journey since 2005 transforming the Resort & Island from a rundown, degraded landscape to a world-leading eco-tourism business!

Our sustainability actions focus on reducing carbon emission, water use, the wastewater produced, protecting & improving the Island’s biodiversity in partnership with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority & private industry, as well as inspiring our guests, the surrounding community, to become ECO Warriors & join us in our mission to protect the Great Barrier Reef for future generations.

The island has a strict policy to recycle and reuse products, as per the Environmental Management System. Guests are required to sort rubbish during their stay on the island e.g. Food, plastic, paper, aluminium and class. All glass (crushed using a glass oppressor and converted to sand), aluminium, tin cans and general refuse is returned to the mainland for recycling where possible. We have also ceased the sale of plastic water bottles on the Island to reduce waste and encourage our guests to use reusable bottles.

The Staff

Lady Elliott Island staff are passionate about the reef & the Island’s fragile eco-system. Join one of their guided Behind the Scenes Tours & you will immediately realise, through their knowledge, guidance, the interrelationships of nature, the need to respect and preserve.

The Eco Certification for Advanced Ecotourism has been awarded to Lady Elliott Island for its environmental ongoing, actions.
The Climate Action Leader award has been given to LAdy Elliott Island for its leadership into reducing climate pollution.
The Green Travel Leader award has been earned by the Lady Elliott Island Eco Resort for its sustainability actions in travel .

TRIPADVISOR REVIEWS

I went to Lady Elliot Island and I was absolutely blown away by it's beauty and the beauty of the reef! I really loved my stay for only 1 day. But I should've stayed longer. I had some close encounters with mostly turtles and a shark! One turtle was probably my size! I definetly left behind a piece of my heart at LEI! I have to go back

Stay Mar 2020

My husband, son and I spent 2 days at Lady Elliott Island in October and loved it but wanted longer so went back for 5 days in January. Its low key but comfortable, food was great and never felt crowded even though booked out. So excited to see turtles swimming, laying and hatchlings! Beautiful fish and sharks and a ray

Stay Feb 2020

This island was the most convenient place to snorkele on the reef and to see nesting & emerging turtles. Turtles were nesting very close to the accommodation. We marked the 100th turtle for the beach that year. I saw turtles in the water when snorkeling, & the history of how the island was built up over time was amazing. Loved it

COVID-19 UPDATE - 5 June 2020

Note: This is directly from the resort

We ( Lady Elliott Island Eco-Resort)  would like to personally update you on the COVID-19 situation and the precautions we are taking to ensure your well-being during your stay.

With the Australian Government implementing social distancing controls to limit any potential spread of COVID-19 in public spaces, the resort has capped its overnight guest numbers to a 50% bed capacity for the health and safety of our guests and team.

We strongly recommend that everyone download the COVIDSAFE APP before visiting Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort.

If you are feeling unwell, please consider the health and safety of your fellow guests and our Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort team and do not travel to Lady Elliot Island.

Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort is an approved COVID Clean practicing business. This means that we have implemented extensive procedures to ensure the safety of our guests and team.

PRE SCREENING:

COVID-19 Self-Assessment Declaration Form: All guests, staff and contractors will receive a COVID-19 Self-Assessment Declaration form that must be completed the day prior to your arrival to the airport. The completed form can be either emailed back to reservations@seairpacific.com.au or please bring along with you on your day of departure. If your risk rating falls within the red ‘high risk’ area do not attend the airport and please contact our Flight Operations Team on +61 7 5599 4509 advising you are unable to travel.

Contactless Payments: To minimise physical contact between our guests and team we are kindly requesting cashless payments when on Island.

AIRPORT CHECK-IN AND AIRCRAFT:

For the health and safety of all guests travelling to/from Lady Elliot Island on our sister company Seair Pacific’s chartered aircraft, passenger numbers have been reduced to allow for adequate spacing between guests in accordance with current aviation requirements.

TEMPERATURE TESTING: Temperature testing all personnel arriving to Lady Elliot Island (including guests, staff, contractors etc) via a non-contact infrared thermometer will take place before boarding any aircraft. Any temperature 37-37.5 degrees Celsius will be considered with caution. Any temperature equalling 37.6 degrees Celsius or higher will be referred to as ‘high risk’ and travel to Lady Elliot Island will not be permitted without further medical clarification or clearance. A full refund will be available, or travel can be postponed to a later date once medically cleared.

SANITISATION POINTS: Non-touch hand sanitiser stations will be available at our Gold Coast and Hervey Bay departure points. For those departing from Brisbane (Redcliffe) or Bundaberg your pilot will kindly instruct you to sanitise your hands prior to boarding the aircraft.

FACE MASKS: Surgical masks in the community are only helpful in preventing people who have coronavirus disease from spreading it to others. If you are well, you do not need to wear a surgical mask as there is little evidence supporting the widespread use of surgical masks in healthy people to prevent transmission in public. Source: health.gov.au (28 May 2020). However, for your comfort you are welcome to bring your own face mask and a small supply will be available in the aircraft should you request one.

DINING/CAFE:

A number of measures have been put in place to comply with the social distancing guidelines and to ensure the health and safety of our guests and team during meal service.

  • In line with some of the protocols surrounding food service, we have had to review the way that we serve our meals to you. Please rest assured you will continue to receive our homestyle cooked meals served by our team for breakfast and dinner.
  • Lunch will be café orders only. If you have pre-paid buffet lunch included, you will order from the café menu
  • Guests will be allocated an evening dining time upon arrival to the Island
  • Takeaway will be available should you prefer not to sit in the dining area

We will continually refine our processes in line with any changes to COVID requirements related to dining.

HOUSEKEEPING:

Ongoing vigilance around personal hygiene and cleaning standards remain key to minimise risk. We have increased the frequency and detail of our already best practice cleaning procedures. This involves an increased focus on the sanitisation of bathrooms and touchpoints around the resort and continued thorough cleaning of resort rooms. Non-touch hand sanitiser stations will be available around the resort.

For short stays (3 nights or less), it is the preference of the Resort to not complete housekeeping services unless requested to minimise contact between guests and staff.

If you request your room to be serviced, we kindly request you vacate your room during this time.

All activities including diving will be available during your stay on Lady Elliot Island.
